An attempt has been made in this paper to estimate the computing speed of a new machine, the MU5, compared with that of an ATLAS machine. The study is based on the hand coded list of thirty ALGOL statements. To make the comparison wide in scope two more third generation machines, CDC 3600 and UNIVAC 1108 have been included in the study.
