Malignant External Otitis

Abstract

Four cases of malignant external otitis relate the seriousness of this disease and its refractive nature to medical and surgical treatment. The disease must be controlled early by systemically administered antibiotics and local ear care. Surgical intervention is indicated when the infection has extended beyond the skin barrier of the ear canal. An essential aspect of the treatment is the rigid control and maintenance of the patient's diabetes mellitus. These patients should be instructed to avoid swimming and self ear canal cleansing and to seek immediate care at the onset of any ear pain or drainage.
