Abstract
Atrial tissue fibrosis affecting the left atrium is a major determinant of the progression of atrial fibrillation (AF)1; thus, a more extensively remodeled atrium represents the substrate needed for the arrhythmia to persist. A clear correlation has been shown between AF and the degree of atrial fibrosis in postmortem histological analysis.2 Atrial fibrosis is also a major determinant for success of rhythm control strategies in AF,3,4 including catheter ablation, one of the most efficacious methods to treat patients with AF.5,6 However, this knowledge has never been incorporated into treatment plans for patients with different degrees of fibrosis. Keywords
