Abstract
Let ξ be an irrational number. A sequence of diophantine approximations unξ−vn→0, with un, vn integers, generally yields an upper bound for the irrationality exponent μ(ξ), that is, a measure of the distance between ξ and rational numbers; the sequence of convergents is the best possible in this direction. We introduce in this article a new way to measure the irrationality of ξ by means of a number ν(ξ), the density exponent, which takes into account not only the size of unξ−vn but also the regularity of the sequence (un)n. In particular, ν(ξ)<+∞ implies that μ(ξ)<+∞. Amongst other things, we show that ν(ξ)=0 almost surely, that ν(ξ)=0 for all quadratic numbers ξ and ν(ξ)<+∞ for all real algebraic numbers with at least one other real conjugate. We provide upper bounds for the density exponent of periods like log(2), π, and ζ(3). We also mention a number of open questions, for example, what is the value of ν(e)?Keywords
