Abstract
The absolute differential cross section for the elastic scattering of 21.6±0.2 Mev deuterons has been measured for Mg, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rh, Ag, Pt, and Au. The cross sections were measured for each element with a two-degree interval between 10° and 42° and between 45° and 150° with a five-degree (or less) interval. The estimated standard deviation ranges from 3% in the forward direction to 6% in the backward direction. The deuterons were detected with a double NaI(Tl) crystal with an energy resolution of about 2%. In most cases the contribution of inelastically scattered deuterons to the cross section is negligible. The ratio of measured cross section to Rutherford cross section shows a pronounced diffraction pattern in all cases.
