Instant Responseelectrosurgery generator for laparoscopy and endoscopy

Abstract
Summary. Computerization of feedback control of a high frequency electrosurgical generator enables the generator to respond rapidly (‘Instant ResponseTM’) to changing conditions encountered during cutting. This method of generator control has important application to the particular performance and safety requirements of laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures. It results in significant improvements in cutting performance, reduced risk of alternate site burns due to capacitive effects and decreased electromagnetic emissions when compared to conventional electrosurgical generators. Measurements show that collateral tissue damage and electrode drag during cutting are reduced significantly. Measurements also confirm that capacitive coupling of electrosurgical energy to cannulae is significantly decreased, thus reducing the hazard of alternate site burns. Finally, data are presented showing this generator has reduced electromagnetic emissions thereby reducing interference with video systems and other operating room equipment.
