Abstract
In an avoidance response situation the effect of sporadic shock delivered independently of the monkey''s behavior was to increase the rate of avoidance responding. Conditioned avoidance extinguished more slowly in the presence of a stimulus signalling the free shock. The free shock effect endured for as long as 300 experimental hours. Keywords
