Abstract
An estimate is made of the elastic relaxation around a vacancy in solid argon when the three-body interaction of Jansen and Zimering is included in the crystal potential. An isotropic elastic continuum model and the lattice theory of Kanzaki give similar results and predict a negative volume change per vacancy from elastic relaxation of the order of 25% of an atomic volume. Keywords
