Social Network Analysis and Intervention with the Elderly

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is (1) to present an approach to the study of social networks; and (2) to demonstrate the applicability of network analysis in determining intervention strategies with the elderly. Social network analysis involves the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the individual's interpersonal relationships, of the degree of integration into various organizational settings, and of the availability of necessary supportive services. This type of analysis reveals strengths within the network to be reinforced, or negative influences that need to be removed or modified. We critically evaluate the risks and gains of network analysis and intervention, and consider certain policy implications.
