The pH of the Gastro-intestinal Tract of Certain Rodents used in Feeding Experiments, and its Possible Significance in Rickets

Abstract
A study showing the gradation in pH from stomach to colon in a number of laboratory rodents in the normal state and after the use of a "high fat" rachitogenic diet. Normally the upper part of the small bowel is acid and the terminal ileum and cecum are either slightly acid or slightly alkalin. There is a possible relationship between the intestinal pH and the occurrence of a phosphoric esterase in the etiology of rickets.
