Abstract
Administration of E. coli endotoxin to normal rats results in a gradual and profound decrease of the levels of circulating platelets. In vitro incubation of fresh platelet-rich rat plasma with this endotoxin does not affect the platelet count. The osmotic fragility of the platelets, determined by release of acid phosphatase is, however, increased. The survival of endotoxin-treated platelets, estimated by their ability to circulate in thrombocytopenic rats, is markedly reduced. Keywords
