INTERFERENCE WITH WOUND HEALING BY THE LOCAL ACTION OF ADRENOCORTICAL STEROIDS1

Abstract
Direct appln. of hog adrenal extract dissolved in 25% alcohol, in daily doses equivalent to 100 or 200 [mu]g. of cortisone (as detd. by the liver glycogen test), to cutaneous wounds in the rat, caused some delay in closure of the wounds, but the treatment did not counteract completely the stimulation to growth caused by cutting the skin. However, a striking interference in formation of granulation tissue resulted from this treatment, the effect being limited to the area of treatment.
