Mass-Spectrometric Study of Photoionization. XI. Hydrogen Sulfide and Sulfur Dioxide

Abstract

Photoionization‐yield curves are obtained for the molecule and fragment ions of H₂S and SO₂ from onsets of ionization to 600 Å. Structural features of the curves are discussed. Ionization thresholds are tabulated and heats of formation of ions and radicals are calculated. Derived quantities (in kilocalories per mole) include $D_0(\mathrm{HS}–\mathrm{H}\text{)\hspace{0.17em}=\hspace{0.17em}89.3}$ , $D_0\mathrm{\hspace{0.17em}(}\mathrm{SH}\text{)\hspace{0.17em}=\hspace{0.17em}83.2}$ , ${\mathrm{\Delta Hf}}_0\mathrm{°(}\mathrm{S}\text{)\hspace{0.17em}=\hspace{0.17em}65.0}$ , $D_0({\mathrm{S}}_2\text{)\hspace{0.17em}=\hspace{0.17em}99.4}$ , and $D_0(\mathrm{OS}–\mathrm{O}\text{)\hspace{0.17em}=\hspace{0.17em}129.1}$ . The ionization energy, $\mathrm{I(}\mathrm{SO}\text{)\hspace{0.17em}=\hspace{0.17em}10.21}\mathrm{eV}$ , is obtained by indirect means.
