Abstract
Recent studies by the author (1955b) have shown that small mammals are important predators of the larch sawfly, Pristiphora erichsonii (Htg.), in eastern Manitoba. During these studies, considerable information was collected on the populations and biology of the more important species of small mammals inhabiting the tamarack bogs of the study region. The animals discussed include the cinerous shrew, Sorex cinereus cinereus Kerr, the saddle-backed shrew, S. arcticus laricorum Jackson, the red-backed vole, Clethrionomys gapperi loringi (Bailey), and the field vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus drummondii (Audubon and Blackman), with notes on less abundant species. Portions of this paper are based in part upon a M.Sc. thesis presented to the University of Manitoba. This is Contribution No. 280, Division of Forest Biology, Science Service, Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, Canada.
