Does a Metabolic Barrier to Circulating Cholesterol Protect the Arterial Wall?

Abstract

A-therogenesis in man and animals appears associated with elevated serum cholesterol, but the mechanism relating these 2 conditions remains obscure. One scheme that is proposed for consideration is that the healthy aorta presents a metabolic barrier to the influx of circulating cholesterol, and that atherogenesis follows breakdown of this barrier.
