HYPERTHYROIDISM IN CHILDREN: OBSERVATIONS IN 50 TREATED CASES, INCLUDING AN EVALUATION OF ENDOCRINE FACTORS*†

Abstract
Fifty cases of hyperthyroidism occurring in children 15 years of age and under are reviewed. Follow-up information was obtained in 75% of the cases, 23 of these subjects underwent physical examination and determination of serum cholesterol and protein-bound iodine as part of this study. Follow-up of 30 patients extended from 5 to 37 years. Based upon this group of 48 females and 2 male patients, the authors conclude that juvenile hyperthyroidism causes no alteration in growth, development, sexual maturity or ability to conceive, if the disease is properly controlled early in its course.
