Abstract
RNA codon recognition by purified Escherichia coli sRNA fractions was examined. Two, possibly three, species of Val-sRNA, two of Ala-sRNA, and two of Met-sRNA were found to differ in relative response to synonym codons. A minor Val-sRNA component (fraction III) preferentially recognized GUU and GUC, whereas Val-sRNA I and n recognized GUA, GUG, and GUU. Val-sRNA I and II differed somewhat in relative response to GUG and GUC. Ala-sRNA I responded preferentially to GCA and GCG, less well to GCU, and slightly to GCC. Ala-sRNA n also recognized these sequences, but responded equally to GCC and GCU. Met-sRNA I accepted formyl groups and responded to UUG, CUG, AUG, and slightly to AUA and GUG.
