Abstract
The Na content of the inorganic phase of bone decreased by 30% in rats made acidotic and depleted of Na by dialysis against NH4Cl. By measurement of Na in bone, serum, and total carcass it was found that 50% of total Na loss came from extracellular water, 30% from bone, and 20% from intracellular water (muscle). Induction of acidosis without marked Na loss by treatment with acetazoleamide led to a 30% decrease in bone Na. No restoration of bone Na occurred after parenteral or oral repair of acidotic rats for periods up to 5 days.
