LIVER GLUCOSE-6-PHOSPHATASE ACTIVITY AND INTRACELLULAR DISTRIBUTION AFTER CORTISONE ADMINISTRATION1

Abstract
Cortisone inhibited body growth, decreased spleen weight and increased liver weight/body weight ratio. Histological studies of the livers of cortisone treated rats demonstrated extensive cytoplasmic vacuolization and heavy deposition of glycogen and fat. Cortisone caused a marked increase in the G-6-Pase activity of the homogenate, nuclear, mitochondrial and microsomal fractions per unit weight, N and average cell. Total liver G-6-Pase activity/100 g body weight was also highly increased. High blood sugar levels were present in these corti-sone-treated animals. The percentage intracellular distribution of G-6-Pase in the liver homogenate was not affected by fasting or cortisone administration.
