Resistance to Bacteria in Hemorrhagic Shock. II. Effect of Transient Vascular Collapse on Sensitivity to Endotoxin.

Abstract

The MLD100 of a purified E. coli endotoxin was determined intravenously in healthy albino rabbits and was 0.13 mg/kg. In rabbits transfused after 2 hours of severe hemorrhagic shock the MLD100 was 0.000001 mg/kg 4 hours after transfusion and the maximal surviving dose was 0.00000012 mg/kg. Fifteen to 24 hours after transfusion the respective figures were > 0.05 and > 0.012, and the maximal surviving dose after 24 and after 48 hours was > 0.023 and 0.05 mg/kg.
