The cytology of Audouinella hermannii (Rhodophyta, Florideophyceae). II. Monosporogenesis

Abstract
Monosporogenesis was described for the 1st time in the Florideophyceae in the freshwater species A. hermannii (Roth) Duby (Acrochaetiales). Three morphological stages were observed in the developing sporangium, ascribed mainly to activities of the endomembrane system (dictyosomes, endoplasmic reticulum and plasmalemma). Based on the few published reports of rhodophytan sporangia, excluding nuclear activities, differentiation in this florideophycean monosporangium was similar to monosporogenesis in the Bangiophyceae and to carposporogenesis and tetrasporogenesis in the Florideophyceae.
