Abstract
The spontaneous variation in the excitability of the most excitable fiber in the branch of the peroneal nerve supplying the medial aspect of digit IV of Rana pipiens was not altered by more than the error of the method by anode polarization of a strength that raised the threshold as much as 70%, by cathode polarization that lowered the threshold as much as 42%, or by Na citrate that lowered the threshold as much as 79%. The oscillations were increased in amplitude by cold, but usually not more than 50% (usual temp. range about 23[degree]-11[degree]). Strychnine sulphate (1:100,000-1:1,000) increased the oscillations as much as 394%, with little effect on threshold or spike height. In concs. of 1:1,000,000 it was ineffective. The possible relation of this action of strychnine on nerve fibers to its action as a convulsant is discussed. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
