Single crystals of AIN were grown in a cylindrical carbon furnace according to the reaction Al 2 O 3 + 3 C + N 2 ⇋ 2 AlN + 3 CO. Both colourless and blue prismatic crystals as well as whiskers of AlN were formed. The morphological development of the synthetic crystals is discussed from a structural point of view.
