Abstract
The effect of a magnetic slurry on the signal of a long flowmeter with concentric pole-pieces is examined. When the field current is used as a reference, the signal increases rapidly with increasing fluid permeability and then becomes asymptotic in behaviour. However, a search coil suitably positioned in the insulating liner and used as a reference gives a signal constant for changing fluid permeability and almost constant for a limited range of axisymmetric velocity profiles.
