The Mechanics of Bioluminescence

Abstract
Previous kinetic interpretations of bioluminescence do not adequately account for the known facts. It is argued that the mechanism is really a stepwise oxidation involving dark reactions, and that energy is preserved as phosphate bond energy. Expts. with doubly purified Cypridina luciferin indicate that phosphate is released during the luminescent reaction with luciferase.
