Abstract
A study of 93 fatal shootings during police or security force action in the Greater Cape Town area in 1985 was carried out. Eighty-seven deaths resulted from security force action during civil unrest situations and 6 from routine law enforcement operations. Date of death, age, sex, race, direction of gunshot wound, type of firearm used, number of gunshot wounds per case, and blood alcohol concentration at autopsy were reviewed.
