Abstract
The activity of single units of the lateral geniculate body [LGB] was recorded in unanesthetized midpontine pretrigeminal cats. One or more small spots of light sinusoidally modulated within the center of the LGB cell receptive field were used for visual stimulation. The signal-to-noise ratio in the sine-wave responses can be improved by increasing the area of the photic stimulus within the center of the receptive field of a given geniculate unit. The finding is interpreted as the results of an ensemble average of retinal channels at LGB level.
