Abstract
Following instillation of isotonic NaCl into the isolated colon of the dog, gradients are established across the colonic mucosa characterized by a higher concn. of bicarbonate and lower concn. of chloride in the colon than in the plasma. Total anion concn. remains essentially unchanged. The development of this equilibrium probably plays a part in the genesis of hyperchloremic acidosis after ureteroenterostomy. Concn. gradients across the colonic wall are also established for Na and K.Keywords
