On the regulation of cell division.

Abstract
The incorporatin of radioactive labels into deoxyrlbonucleic-acid (DNA) ribonucleic-acid (RNA), and proteins showed that methylglyoxal inhibits cell proliferation in Escherichia coli by interfering with protein synthesis. The protein synthesis can be reactivated by the addition of thiol compounds. The DNA and RNA synthesis of E. coli, in presence of the ketoaldehyde, continues and forms a "pool" even If infected with coliphage.
