Abstract
Analysis of "evidence which is far from ideal" (bibliography of 96 titles) suggests that the cerebrospinal fluid is not a dialysate in equilibrium with the blood plasma or an ultrafiltrate, for the pressure in the capillaries of the chorioid plexus is too small to account for the free energy change which takes place in the generation of the fluid, but a secretion in the sense that cells must do work in its formation.
