Ion—Molecule Reactions in an O2+–H2O System

Abstract
A sequence of reactions which occur in ionized O2–H2O mixtures has been studied with the following results: O2++H2O+MO2+·H2O+M,   k=0.9, 2.8, and 2.0×10−28cm6sec−1forM=He, N2, and Ar, O4++H2OO2+·H2O+O2,   k=2.2×10−9cm3sec−1, O2+·H2O+H2OH3O+·OH+O2,   k=1.9×10−9cm3sec−1, H3O++OH+O2,   k≤ 3× 10−10cm3sec−1, H3O+·OH+H2OH3O+·H2O+OH,   k=3×10−9cm3sec−1. The measurements were made at 295°K in a flowing afterglow system, operated in both fixed and variable reaction length modes. The results indicate that D(O2+·H2O)〉D(O2+·O2), D(H3O+·H2O)≳D(H3O+·OH) .
