The Maxwell−Garnett effect is analyzed with the view of utilizing the optical phenomena associated with aggregated metal films for practical purposes. The basic equations are summarized and parameters pertinent to controlling the absorption and resonance wavelength are discussed. Examples are shown and potential uses are proposed.
