EFFECTS OF CORTISONE ON PLASMA CELLS AND RETICULO-ENDOTHELIAL SYSTEM IN HYPERIMMUNIZED RABBITS

Abstract
Rabbits, hyperimmunized with intraven. injn. of HCHO-killed Pfeiffer bacilli, were treated with 20 mg. daily of cortisone for 6 days. Controls were not given cortisone; and pre-cortisone biopsies of liver, spleen and kidney were taken in some animals. Hyperimmunization produced massive plasma cell infiltrates in spleen, which disappeared after cortisone. Intercellular hyaline accumulations were found around degenerating plasma cells and in the reticulum of the spleen. Liver glycogen was dramatically increased by cortisone. Serum [gamma] globulin rose during immunization; [alpha] globulin rose and [gamma] globulin and blood Hb fell on cortisone treatment.
