Abstract
Necrotizing fasciitis is a relatively rare disease characterized by rapid development of signs and symptoms, profound prostration, and the appearance of pathognomonic bluish mottling of the skin. The basic pathological process consists of necrosis of the subcutaneous fascia due to the toxic effects of the mucopeptide portion of the cell wall of group A/3-hemolytic streptococci. The importance of early surgical treatment is emphasized.
