THE URINARY EXCRETION OF IODINE. I. THE LOSS OF IODINE IN THE URINE FOLLOWING THYROIDECTOMY

Abstract
The usual daily loss of I, in the urine of non-goitrous hospital patients, was 0.025-0.075 mgm. In 5 patients with hyperthyroidism, it was increased to 0.201-0.269 mgm. daily. A great increase immediately followed thyroidectomy and was maintained for days. A part of this I comes from the ex-trathyroid tissues. I may have another function than that of forming a large portion of the thyroid hormone.
