COMPARISON OF SEVERAL METHODS FOR EVALUATING IMAGE QUALITY OF RADIOGRAPHIC SCREEN-FILM SYSTEMS

Abstract
The appearance of a radiograph results from a complicated interaction of several factors, each of which can be studied separately, but whose relative importance is not known in detail. It is difficult, therefore, to develop a general technique for measuring radiographic image quality which holds for all types of images under any imaging condition. To illustrate this point, results obtained from several often-used methods of quality evaluation are compared: Contrast-detail diagram, modulation transfer function, and wire-mesh test. It is concluded that image-quality evaluations by means of modulation transfer analysis and the visual inspection of wiremesh and hole radiographs can result in significantly different results.
