The radial distributions of a binary mixture of spheres

Abstract
The coordinates of about 1500 spheres in a random close-packed mixture of two sizes have been measured. The model consisted of fraction one-eighth inch and fraction nine-sixty-fourths inch steel balls (ie a diameter difference of about 12%) in equal proportions. Radial distributions of four types, A and B, AA, AB, and BB, are presented. All the distributions are similar in shape and show several characteristics of detail which are also found in the radial distribution for spheres of one size. The packing density of the mixture was found to be 0632(6)±00015, which is about 06% below the value for a single-sized random packing of spheres.
