Entropy content from strange-particle ratios in the E802 experiment

Abstract
A method is given for reconstructing the local state of a heavy ion collision which produced the detected particles. Only some particle ratios are needed; in the simplest case two particles will determine the local state, assuming complete thermodynamic equilibrium, and further particles are used to check this last assumption. Applying the method on the available data of the E802 experiment, T approximately=120 MeV, n/n0 approximately 0.4 and S/NB approximately 14 are obtained, which is a reasonable break-up stage.
