Traveling Waves in Rotating Cylindrical Shells

Abstract
Vibration analysis of long, thin cylindrical shells rotating about their longitudinal axes is presented. It is shown that only traveling waves may be excited in a rotating shell. Furthermore, coriolis and centrifugal accelerations may have significant effects on the natural wave speeds of forward and backward-traveling waves. Numerical results are presented for a case which includes an external torque acting on the ends of the shell.
