Abstract
Slices of rat heart and diaphragm release a lipase similar to lipoprotein lipase into a triglyceride medium containing heparin. This effect is greatest when tissues from fasted animals are used and parallels an increase in lipolytic activity of homogenates of heart and diaphragm with fasting. Other studies have indicated that fasting modifies the uptake of labeled chylomicrons in heart and adipose tissues in a direction similar to the change produced by fasting in lipoprotein lipase activity in these tissues. Thus the activity of this enzyme may in part determine the tissue distribution of circulating triglycerides.
