A role theory perspective was utilized to examine how women's perceived filial role strain can affect their relationships with their elderly mothers. Data from 40 middle-aged women and 24 of their mothers demonstrated that women who reported greater role strain had poorer quality mother-daughter relationships. Suggested by the findings is that social policies and programs which relieve the role strain experienced by adult daughters may also benefit their elderly parents.
