A pH gradient across the intact root of Helianthus annuus has been measured using pH microelectrodes. The results indicate a steady increase in pH from epidermis to protoxylem. There is evidence for the activity of a proton extrusion pump in some of the cells. The possibility that the pH gradient may be the basis of centripetal ion transport across the root is discussed.
