Effects of Total Body X-Radiation on Salivary Components of Dogs

Abstract
Significant decreases in mean P and N content of dogs" saliva occurred after exposure to varying amts. of X-irradiation. Lysozyme activity and acidity of saliva increased during the 24-day post irradiation sampling period. Salivary lysozyme activity was not influenced by decrease in blood or salivary leukocytes. These salivary changes are not applicable as a diagnostic means for evaluation of the effects of total body irradiation. Phase microscopic observations revealed a tremendous increase in bacterial numbers with onset of oral degenerative changes. Because of their size and shape treponemal forms were most evident during this period.
