There are divergent views as to the physician's duty when a patient is critically ill. Some contend that the physician must sustain life as long as possible; others hold that he should alleviate suffering and make no effort to prolong life. The latter are supported by moralists. Physicians must recognize man's right to live and die peacefully. Otherwise lifepreserving treatment may become a scientific weapon for the prolongation of agony.
