Modes at Rest and Their Stability in Coupled Non-Linear Systems

Abstract
This paper deals with the stability of modes at rest in free, undamped non-linear two-degree-of-freedom systems governed by equations of motion of the form The conditions necessary for the existence of motion in a single mode are discussed and a criterion for stability of the mode at rest established. The theory is compared with results of tests made on an experimental model. The effect of viscous damping on stability is also examined. The results obtained are applicable to current practical problems in the field of vibration isolation and suppression.
