STATISTICAL ASPECTS OF HEAVY-ION REACTIONS

Abstract
Nucleon transfer reactions between heavy ions above the Coulomb barrier exhibit features that can neither be understood in terms of one step processes nor by assuming the formation of a compound nucleus. Therefore the intermediate concept of a partial statistical equilibrium is introduced. The available experimental data are consistent with the theory for neutron transfer processes. Proton stripping reactions are enhanced less strongly than predicted theoretically. This can be understood as an effect of the Coulomb barrier between the ions
