New Weed Control Opportunities: Development of Soybeans With A Roundup Ready™ Gene

Abstract
54United States consumers continue to spend less of their disposable income on food every year (11.4% in 1992) (Dunham 1993). Two factors contribute to this low percentage of income spent on food - increasing personal incomes and improvements in food production efficiency. Improvements in food production efficiency arise from fertilizer use, farm equipment and farm management advances, plant breeding, and pesticide use. Further improvements in agriculture will be required if food production efficiency is to keep pace with the ever-rising world population. Higher productivity agriculture will allow for reduced usage of marginal lands, marshes, and other environmental habitats.
