Abstract
Horizontal cross-sections of skull and brain of 500 hospital autopsies were examined. The perimeter of the left side of the skull was greater than the right in about 75% of cases. Allowing for cutting errors, no constant difference in weight of the 2 hemispheres was observed in 50 fresh brains, so that cerebral asymmetry seems to be due to altered shape of 2 equal masses. For 169 cases information on handedness, indicated by writing, was available; cranial and cerebral asymmetry are not associated with handedness.
