Abstract
The results of a study of the inelastic scattering of 42-MeV α particles from the odd nuclei K39 and V51 are compared with the predictions of the shell model and the weak-coupling collective model. The results of a variety of other experiments are correlated with the present results whenever possible in order to test the predictions of the two models. Some success is found for various states with each model, and, in particular, the 3.60- and 3.90-MeV states of K39 are assigned spins of 92 and 72 on the basis of the weak-coupling model, while spins of 32 and 52 are suggested for two states near 4.14 MeV. Good agreement with the data for V51 is found by using the shell-model prediction with the L=2 cross sections enhanced by a factor of 4.
