Abstract
A multichannel eikonal description of atomic collisions is presented. The formula for the scattering amplitude reduces upon successive approximation to expressions previously derived. In particular, the equations, in the heavy-particle or high-energy limit reduce to the standard impact parameter formulae. A four-state treatment of e-H(1s) elastic and 2s and 2p inelastic scattering calculated cross sections, which illustrate the effects of various approximations, compare very favourably with other refined theoretical methods and with experiment.
